SALINAS, Calif. — Several of the produce mascots expected to race at the California Rodeo Salinas to benefit Ag Against Hunger visited a nearby school to mingle with students and promote fresh produce consumption.
The fourth annual Fight Hunger Night is set for July 18 at the rodeo. Five of the 11 mascots in the race lineup came to Fremont Elementary in Salinas June 25.
The school is one of many in Monterey County that benefit from leafy greens and strawberries donated through Ag Against Hunger’s More Produce for Schools program. The items help stock salad bars.
Ocean Mist Farms’ Arti the Artichoke; The Nunes Co.’s Tobo the Fox; Tanimura & Antle’s Captain T&A; and Pacific International Marketing’s Buster Broccoli joined Fresh Express’ Salad Pal at the school’s lunchroom.
Each grower-shipper or processor pays an entry fee of $1,000 for Fight Hunger Night. Those funds and other donations go to the nonprofit organization. The rodeo is also expecting entries from Bengard Ranches, Church Bros. LLC, Dole Fresh Vegetables, Duda Farm Fresh Foods, Sakata Seeds and Taylor Farms.
This year, fans of the event can vote on their favorite mascot on Facebook.
