The third annual produce mascot race is July 19.SALINAS, Calif. — Grower-shipper mascots gearing up for their annual fundraising race at the California Rodeo Salinas came to an Ag Against Hunger glean to publicize the July 19 event.
The third-annual race at the rodeo’s Fight Hunger Night is expected to feature 10 produce mascots in an event that raised more than $25,000 for Salinas-based nonprofit Ag Against Hunger in two years.
Ocean Mist Farms provided the July 13 glean for the organization’s volunteers, who netted 2,884 pounds of cauliflower — equal to about 105 reusable plastic containers. The vegetables will be distributed to food banks.
Mascots at the glean included representatives of Ocean Mist Farms; Chiquita Brands International; Dole Fresh Vegetables; Pacific International Marketing; Bengard Ranches; Tanimura & Antle; and The Nunes Co. Slated to join them in the race — originally inspired by the Milwaukee Brewers’ racing sausages — are Church Bros. LLC, Duda Farm Fresh Foods and Taylor Farms.
Tracy Hinson, Miss California Rodeo Salinas for 2013, was among the cauliflower cutters.
