Michael DeChiara is the new executive director for the Massachusetts Farm to School Project. He began work at the nonprofit program on Dec. 2.
DeChiara brings nearly three decades of nonprofit management experience to the program, He will oversee the organization’s work with local farms and institutions, connecting local produce to cafeterias in public and private K-12 schools, colleges, universities and hospitals. DeChiara will also lead the education initiatives that teach growers, foodservice professionals and students about the importance of farm-to-school foods.
“Since our founding nine years ago, there have been great strides made to raise awareness of the importance of farms to local economies and of healthy food in our schools and institutions. Now our challenge is how to both deepen and broaden what has been accomplished so that systems are developed to make farm to school sustainable,” said DeChiara in a news release.
