On Aug. 18 at the Boston Public Market, Massachusetts environmental officials and tomato growers gathered for the 30th-annual tomato contest.

This year’s contest brought in 135 entries in categories including field tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, heirloom varieties and heaviest tomato, according to a news release.

“Today is a celebration of the harvest season and our dedicated farmers here in the Commonwealth,” Department of Agricultural Resources commissioner Gregory Watson said in the release. “The tomatoes brought to Boston were the result of months of our growers’ hard work and care.”

The entries were judged by a panel of food writers, chefs, produce experts and state officials on flavor, firmness, exterior color and shape.

In addition to the contest, the events included tomato tasting, recipe demonstrations and information on nutrition and local farms. The contest was hosted by the Boston Public Market Association and sponsored by the Department of Agricultural Resources, the New England Vegetable and Berry Growers Association and Massachusetts Farmers Markets.

Still Life Farm in Hardwick, Mass., won the Cherry Tomato Category with its Orange Sun Sugar. In the Heirloom Category, the Striped German tomato from Langwater Farm in North Easton, Mass., won the first place prize. Verrill Farm, Concord, Mass., won the Heaviest Tomato Category for the second year in a row with an Aussie tomato that weighed 2.785 pounds. The Slicing Category’s first prize went to Langwater Farm in North Easton, Mass., with its BHN 589 tomato.
