Mastronardi Produce is in the process of doubling the size of its Coldwater, Mich., greenhouse.

Kingsville, Ontario-based Mastronardi recently broke ground on the second phase of the Coldwater facility, which opened in 2012, according to a company news release. Construction is expected to finish in Summer 2014.

When it’s completed, the Coldwater greenhouse is expected to have 60 acres of vegetable production.

The facility uses grow lights to provide tomatoes to Midwest consumers year-round. Mastronardi currently produces Sunset Angel Sweet grape tomatoes and tomatoes-on-the-vine in Coldwater.

After the expansion, the company plans to grow a wider variety of products.

“We’re very happy to get started on Phase II construction,” said Christopher Gill, Mastronardi’s director of greenhouse operations, in the release. “This new addition will feature even more technological advances and more opportunity for the community, which is always a top priority.”

Mastronardi, a 2013 recipient of the Southwest Michigan Catalyst Award for contributions to the community, hopes to add as many as 90 new jobs with the expansion of its Coldwater greenhouse.

The company also expects the expansion to lead to increased energy efficiency and fewer food miles, since more locally grown products will be available to Michigan consumers.

In addition, the facility will use rainwater irrigation and recycle its water supply.

In recognition of Mastronardi’s green initiatives, the facility is expected to be Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program-verified on its completion.
