Military commissaries in the Southern U.S. are now receiving fruits and vegetables shipped in reusable plastic containers supplied by IFCO Systems.

The Military Produce Group, which ships produce from three distribution centers to 71 commissaries in the Southern U.S., has switched from corrugated boxes to RPCs for the shipment of several commodities, according to an IFCO news release.

The Military Produce Group, a division of the Defense Commissary Agency, ships from distribution centers in Norfolk, Va.; Birmingham, Ala.; and Savannah, Ga.

“The Defense Commissary Agency is committed to an environmentally sustainable operation and applauds (Military Produce Group’s) use of reusable containers to limit the amount of waste heading to landfills and reduce product damage,” Bridget Bennett, supervisory category manager for produce at the agency, said in the release.

IFCO has more than 180 million RPCs in circulation, according to the company.

“IFCO is honored to play a role in assisting the Military Produce Group in becoming even more environment-friendly by eliminating waste from the supply chain.” Mike Ellis, IFCO’s director of supply chain development, said in the release.

The Military Produce Group sources fruits and vegetables from grower-shippers including Village Farms, Seald Sweet, Bolthouse Farms and Tanimura & Antle.
