Oxnard, Calif.-based Mission Produce has begun distributing asparagus in an upright, 2.25-pound modified atmosphere plastic bag for retail, said Bill Tarleton, director of marketing and communications.

The gusseted bag, using StePac’s proprietary Xtend technology, keeps asparagus hydrated and firm, as well as extend shelf life.

“The packaging is similar to the club store pack, but it stands up and looks very nice in produce displays,” Tarleton said. It became available for retail within the past month.

“We wanted to go with StePac because asparagus can break down quickly if you’re not careful,” he said. “It’s the top-of-the-line packaging when you want to protect and maintain the freshness of the product.”
