Mocon expands oxygen test kit

Dan GalbraithGuy Wray, marketing manager for Minneapolis-based Mocon Inc., shows off the company’s new OpTech tablet, OpTech needle and ImPULSE sensor at Pack Expo 2012 in Chicago. CHICAGO — Minneapolis-based Mocon Inc. boasted three new accessories for its OpTech oxygen test system for food Oct. 28-31 at Pack Expo 2012.

The OpTech Needle, OpTech Tablet and ImPULSE Sensor came out in early October, said Guy Wray, marketing manager.

“The upgrades include a portability kit to enable mobile testing away from the lab, the ability to test packages with very little headspace — such as blisters and food packages — and the new ImPULSE Sensor has been engineered to work with opaque materials as well as with retort applications,” said Sophia Dilberakis, of Chicago-based SD Communications, representing Mocon.

“Users can test samples right on the production line,” said Doug Lindemann, vice president for Mocon.

Users may insert the new needle attachment into small headspace packages to record an oxygen concentration level reading without extracting a sample.

The ImPULSE Sensor works with packages incorporating opaque materials, Lindemann said.

“A tack with the fluorescent sensor material punctures the package and adheres via a self-adhesive,” he said “ ... When the package is punctured, a small hole is created. Oxygen from inside the package is now exposed to the sensor, which is sealed from the external environment. A reading is then taken through the transparent ‘head’ of the tack.”

Mocon has increased its oxygen permeation testing for packaging with the new RACK-6 conditioning system via its OX-TRAN Model 2/61, which measures oxygen transmission for up to six flexible or rigid packages at a time.
