An Idaho seed company expects growers to plant about 3,000 acres of its new sweet corn variety in 2012.

Growers planted about 150 acres of Caldwell, Idaho-based Crookham Co.’s Amaize sweet corn on a test basis in 2011, said Lisa Friedrich, marketing director of Golden Sun Marketing, Minnetrista, Minn., which is marketing Amaize for Crookham.

“This year it was mostly available in the Midwest,” Friedrich said. “Next year, plans are to increase distribution, but they’re still working on partnerships with growers.”

Amaize is a white sweet corn variety that Crookham took 20 years to develop, Friedrich said.

The variety has a distinctive crunch and a long shelf life, lasting 20% longer than comparable varieties, she said.

Amaize grows best in the northern U.S., Friedrich said.

The variety will be marketed in 2012 in bulk and tray packs, and a supporting marketing campaign featuring retail point-of-sale materials, in-store demos and public relations and social media outreach is planned, she said.

Amaize corn is now sold by Burpee Seed Copany. They only have the Hybrid seed. It will not taste like the heirloom.

On the Amaize Sweet Corn website it clearly says that it is a hybred not a heirloom, so it wouldn't taste like a heirloom. "Amaize™ sweet corn is bred using traditional methods through hybridization and is not genetically modified. Amaize™ is grown locally using conventional farming methods."
