Owners of greenhouse operation Mucci Farms shared sustainability tips with officials from cities across Canada recently when members of the Federation of Municipalities toured their facilities.
About 30 delegates from the federation’s Sustainable Communities Conference visited the greenhouses, packing facilities and energy plants at Kingsville, Ontario, said Emily Murracas, marketing coordinator for Mucci Marketing International.
Conference delegates toured three Mucci business entities: Remasco, which designed and constructed proprietary gasification technology; Mucci Farms newest 30-acre greenhouse; and Mucci Pac’s new 65,000-square-foot packing and storage area.
The Remasco energy plant at Mucci is fueled with pellets made from municipal solid waste from the greater Toronto area. The pellets consistently deliver 10,000 BTUs per pound and exceed all emission standards from the Canadian Ministry of Environment.
The new greenhouse, which is expected to begin harvesting its first tomatoes in March, has double-thermal curtain technology that reduces greenhouse heating energy consumption by more than 30%, Joe Spano, Mucci vice president of sales and marketing said recently.
The recently renovated Mucci Group offices and new warehouse use high-efficiency LED and fluorescent lighting. Mucci grows tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers.
Mucci Farms was one of four businesses selected to provide tours for the delegates at the sustainability conference Feb. 13-15 in Windsor, Ontario.
