A New York City group aimed at fitness for youths with disabilities is getting $25,000 from Turbana to start a new program.
The New York City affiliate of KEEN USA — Kids Enjoy Exercise Now — runs recreation programs for children and young adults with developmental and physical disabilities, at no cost.
In a Turbana contest, “Win 25K for Your Cause,” the nonprofit led with 6,745 votes among more than 36,100 cast for 85 nominated causes.
Coral Gables, Fla.-based Turbana plans to begin working with the organization to develop a concept for a new program worth $25,000.
“Turbana believes that community involvement is about more than donating money, it’s about working directly with the community,” Juan Alarcon, chief executive officer, said in a news release. “We want to establish a dialogue directly with the community to ask them what they need the most, and then work hand in hand toward a common goal. We’ve been operating this way ever since we first started working with our farmers and growers in Colombia.”
The contest was part of a larger movement, “Growing Smiles, Sharing Goodness” launched by Turbana last year. It seeks to inspire individuals to eat healthy, be active and get involved in their communities.
