Natural Delights Medjool Dates, Bard Valley, Calif., is preparing for Ramadan.
Ramadan, the yearly month-long Muslim observance, is the holiest time of the year on the Islamic calendar. During this time Muslims fast from dusk to dawn. To break their daily fast participants customarily eat a Medjool date, according to a news release.
This tradition dates back to the seventh century.
This year Ramadan is July 19 to Aug. 18.
“The centuries-old tradition of breaking fast with a Medjool date is actually linked to the nutritional content of the fruit itself,” said Dave Anderson, marketing director of the Bard Valley Medjool Date Growers Association, in the release.
Natural Delights will work with wholesale and retail partners to display two, five and eleven pound boxes.
Retailers will also display shippers with special seasonal Ramadan header cards, according to the news release.
