New Jersey Food Council honors retailersOn March 20, the Trenton-based New Jersey Food Council hosted a “night of distinction” reception at the Palace at Somerset in Somerset, N.J.

The Broadway themed-event and slate of honorees attracted nearly 600 guests including prominent food industry executives, according to a news release.

During the festivities, the organization honored these retailers:

  • John Ruane, senior vice president of fresh merchandising for Netherlands-based Ahold NV’s Ahold USA Inc., Carlisle, Pa.;
  • Joe Sheridan, president and chief operating officer of Wakefern Food Corp., Elizabeth, N.J.; and
  • Joe Sofia, vice president of Wegmans Food Markets Inc., Rochester, N.Y.

The council presented the three with industry achievement awards for contributions to advance the council’s mission, for achieving significant food business success and for civic service, according to the release.

“This distinguished class of food industry leaders is being recognized for their continued achievements in the ultra-competitive New Jersey marketplace,” council president Linda Doherty said in the release. “We were thrilled with the outpouring of support for this event and the honorees, which was no surprise given these honorees are among the most respected leaders in the industry. We are grateful to have the opportunity to honor them.”

During the program, the council premiered a video celebrating the group’s 45th anniversary.

The video showcases the council’s work since its 40th anniversary celebration in 2009.

The council represents nearly 400 members which includes representatives of 1,200 retail food stores, wholesalers as well as food manufacturers and suppliers.
