Born in Medford, N.J., Consalo grew-up on the family farm and lived in Glassboro, N.J, Landisville, N.J., and Vineland.
Consalo, who was retired since the mid-1990s, was one of four sons of William Consalo Sr. and Louise Consalo, who founded the grower-shipper operation in 1927.
Augie Consalo was the brother of company principals Vincent “Sonny” Consalo Sr., and the late Anthony “Andy” Consalo and William Consalo Jr.
Son-in-law Brian Kargman, owner BK Trucking Co., in Newfield, N.J., said Augie Consalo was well-respected.
“Augie was an innovator and was well-liked not only in the industry but in the community as well,” Kargman said. “He and his brothers helped turn the family farm into a thriving produce organization that in its three decade-plus heyday, was the major player with a big chain store following up and down the East Coast.”
The brothers eventually sold their company shares to others during the early 2000s and the company is no longer in operation.
Consalo was a two-term president of the Garden State chapter of the Washington, D.C.-based United Fresh Produce Association, and was active in the Newark, Del.-based Produce Marketing Association.
In 1995, the New Jersey United group named him Produce Man of the Year and he was also honored by the Marlton-based Vegetable Growers Association of New Jersey.
Consalo was a member of the Ottawa, Ontario-based Canadian Produce Marketing Association and the New Jersey Farm Bureau and also received recognition from the Vineland Produce Auction and the New Jersey Senate and General Assembly.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Dorothy Consalo, a daughter, two grandsons, two sisters and brother Vincent “Sonny” Consalo Sr.
Visitation is scheduled for Aug. 26 and Aug. 27 with an Aug. 27 Mass of Christian Burial scheduled at Our Lady of The Blessed Sacrament — Church Of St. Michael, 504 West Avenue, Minotola, N.J. Burial is scheduled for the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Vineland.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Augie’s memory to Billy Consalo Memorial Scholarships, c/o Dottie Kargman, 1485 Catawba Ave., Newfield, NJ, 08344.
