gala appleApple harvest is underway across New York, and the state remains on track to ship about 32 million bushels this season.

The state’s nearly 700 growers typically pick about 29.5 million bushels. This year’s expected total would set a modern record, according to a news release from the Fishers-based New York Apple Association.

As of Sept. 12, mcintosh harvest was underway in eastern New York and soon to spread statewide. Harvest of galas, Honeycrisps, Zestars and other varieties had begun statewide.

“Our consumers who have been waiting for us to get back into the market after last year’s short crop will have lots to celebrate this fall,” Jim Allen, the association’s president, said in the release.

Excellent weather conditions — beginning during bloom and continuing into harvest thus far — have translated into large, juicy, sweet fruit, according to the release.
