The New York apple industry contributed fruit for a statewide promotion.

The Fishers-based New York Apple Association donated thousands of apples for Big Apple Crunch events in New York City and Syracuse, N.Y., according to an association news release.

At the Big Apple Crunch, now in its third year, people bit into an apple simultaneously at noon Oct. 24.

Kinderhook, N.Y.-based Samascott Orchards donated more than 2,000 galas and empires for a Big Apple Crunch at New York’s Union Square Greenmarket. Other Big Apple Crunch events were held in New York’s other four boroughs.

The event in Syracuse was attended by Jim Boeheim, coach of the Syracuse men’s basketball team.

Seventeen other New York colleges and universities participated in this year’s Crunch.
