The annual October fundraiser, dubbed the New York Express, relied on pallets of iceberg lettuce and celery donated by Salinas Valley grower-shippers including Steinbeck Country Produce, Dole Fresh Vegetables, Ocean Mist Farms, Taylor Farms, Tanimura & Antle and The Nunes Co.

C.H. Robinson donated transportation and delivery costs. Denise Goodman and Michael Tambor of Bronx, N.Y.-based M&R Tomato Distributors Inc. sold the lettuce and celery for no fee.

The Hunts Point sale benefits the nonprofit’s fall and winter programs. The money represents almost 620,000 servings of fresh vegetables and fruit for users of food bank services, according to a news release.

Since 1990 Ag Against Hunger has collected more than 210 million pounds of fresh produce. Initial distribution is in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties, feeding more than 158,000 monthly through food banks. Additional distribution goes to food banks across the West Coast.
