Oxnard, Calif.-based avocado company Mission Produce has completed construction of a 100,000-square foot forward distribution and ripening center in Swedesboro, N.J.
The site includes 360 ripe pallet spaces with room to expand, plus 4,500 cooler pallet spaces and 23 dock doors.
The company had outgrown its older New Jersey facility, Jeremy Currier, vice president of distribution and logistics, said in a news release.
“With the anticipation of large supplies coming out of Peru, the new center will give us plenty of room to accommodate the volume,” Currier said.
New Jersey is Mission Produce’s main receiving location for Peruvian avocados.
“During the Peruvian season, which runs from May to September, we anticipate 25 containers per day, which equates to over 200 loads per week,” he said.
Avocado consumption has grown faster in the Northeast than in other U.S. regions in recent years, according to the company, and sales are projected to increase.
Mission Produce also plans to use some space as a commercial cooling facility.
“We will have the room to do bagging, repacks, fumigation, forced air cooling, etc., for other companies and commodities,” Currier said in the release.
Besides the U.S., the company has operations in Mexico, Peru, Chile, New Zealand and Canada.
