New products abound at Expoalimentaria in Peru

Among the more than 500 exhibitors were 56 fresh produce exporting companies that handle products including  asparagus, avocados, citrus, grapes and mangoes.


San Isidro-based AFEX intends to increase mango shipments to the U.S., said Ioana Lazar, marketing director.

The company has been shipping kent mangoes to the U.S. for two years, she said, with 40% of AFEX’s 30 container loads going to the U.S. and 60% to Europe.

The company plans to reverse those percentages this season, sending 60% of shipments to the U.S., which has been a more stable market, Lazar said.

AFEX also exports organic bananas, she said.

Agro Jugos

Agro Jugos SAC plans a plant expansion near it current Sullana production and packing facility, said Peter Larsson, commercial manager.

The new facility will feature hot water treatment lines that will improve potential for treating fresh mangoes for export the U.S., Larsson said.

The company also recently acquired 160 hectares of land for mango production in the Sullana area, bringing its total to 250 hectares, he said.

Agro Jugos ships kent mangoes and is looking to expand into new commodities for the fresh market, including melons, he said.


AIB plans to begin shipping avocados to the U.S. next season, said Axel Bohmer, commercial manager.

AIB ships, asparagus, citrus and grapes to the U.S., he said.


APEM, the Peruvian Mango Growers and Exporters Association, is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to gain entry for larger fruit that are more suitable for fresh-cut, said Juan Rivera, director.

Current regulations for hot water treatment for mangoes from Peru allows fruit of 650 grams or less, Rivera said, and the association hopes to win approval for fruit up to 750 grams.

APEM represents 150 exporters, he said.


Camposol — an exporter of asparagus, citrus, grapes and mangoes — plans to begin shipping avocados to the U.S., said Ruben Wong, fresh asparagus products sales manager.

The company has 2,000 hectares of avocados, 95% for the fresh market, he said, and Camposol intends to ship 50% to 60% of its production to the U.S. he said.

Trujillo-based Danper will enter the U.S. avocado market in 2012, said Cristina Albuquerque, head of fresh sales.

With an export market of more than US$ 1500 million (fresh fruits and vegetables) from Peru to the world 2010, with a growth average rate of more than 20% annualy, with the real opening of the US Market for the HASS Avocado, with the grapes, citrus, mangoes, asparagus, and many other produce, with the free trade agreements policy, with our climate and rich soil; Peru have a real growth potential as a strategic produce sourcing for the world.

Indeed, for three days, Peru was the world capital of foods, showing its potential in products from agro, fishing and aquaculture sectors. Andean grains such as quinoa and amaranth, among other products, shone and captivated the interest of international buyers, the same for fruits and vegetables coming from all over the country. This is why Expoalimentaria became in one of the most importants fairs in Latin America.

This third edition of Expoalimentaria exceeded all expectations. It had products from organic chocolate to chili marmalade, asparagous and grapes. This fair is improving every year and shows a wide variety of food products which Peru can offer to the world. I could see Erick Maas, International Sales Director of Fancy Food, and Betsy Power, winner in Fancy Food fair. Congratulations.
