Lifestyle Foods plans to launch a line of grab-and-go sandwiches in modified atmosphere packaging with separate compartments for fresh lettuce or spinach.
The four sandwiches are expected to be available in January for retail and foodservice. Suggested retail price will be $4.49 to $5.99. They range from 310 to 440 calories and will come with whole-grain ciabatta bread.
The sandwiches are:
- grilled chicken with romaine lettuce;
- vegetarian, with grilled vegetables, hummus and spinach;
- smoke cured ham with romaine lettuce; and
- smoked chicken breast with romaine lettuce.
“The items are targeted at specialty outlets such as vending and college dining, while at the same time being ideal for both convenience stores and supermarkets,” said Jeff Breil, spokesman for York, Pa.-based Lifestyle Foods.
Distribution will be on the East Coast and in the Midwest.
Lifestyle Foods’ packaging for the products uses design elements and modified atmosphere technology to promote airflow between ingredients.
“Most retailers can expect a 10-day shelf life without diminished quality,” Breil said. “These items are a response to what is widely available (on the market) — in most cases sandwiches with soggy or no produce, coupled with a brief one- to two-day shelf life.”
Lifestyle Foods’ other packaged products include salads, snacks and sides.
