With the deal just signed in recent weeks, Associated Potato Growers Inc., Grand Forks, N.D., is now partnering with Nonpareil, Blackfoot, Idaho, to provide Betty Crocker with fresh potatoes from the Red River Valley.
Paul Dolan, general manager of Associated Potato Growers, said he and other company officials met with Nonpareil and Betty Crocker staff in January to discuss the potential deal.
“Things worked out and we are now the sole Red River Valley supplier for Betty Crocker,” Dolan said March 4. “It’s pretty big news around here, possibly the biggest we’ve had.”
Dolan said the volume of potatoes Betty Crocker will need is not yet clear, but Associated Potato Growers is already filling bags.
He said he thought the family-owned, cooperative nature of Associated Potato Growers appealed to the Betty Crocker vision of home-cooked meals and time-tested recipes.
Associated Potato Growers is offering Betty Crocker-branded reds and golds in 3-, 5-, and 10-pound bags. Betty Crocker also has bulk bins that the north Dakota growers will be filling.
