Ocean Mist Farms has donated $10,000 to Salinas, Calif.-based nonprofit Ag Against Hunger for its holiday season efforts.
Ocean Mist Farms, Castroville, Calif., and other Salinas Valley grower-shippers have a history of supporting the nonprofit through donated product, acreage for volunteer gleaning and other means.
Laura Berlanga, Ocean Mist product innovation and research manager and an Ag Against Hunger board member, presented the donation to the organization’s executive director, Lindsay Coate.
Ocean Mist Farms has participated in Ag Against Hunger since 1990, and has donated more than 5.2 million pounds of produce since 2002, Berlanga said in a news release.
“Their support, be it financial, donated product or fields to glean, has enabled us to reach a milestone of 200 million pounds of produce given to food banks in the past 22 years,” executive director Lindsay Coate said in the release.
Ag Against Hunger collects excess produce from growers and shippers, consolidates it at its cooler and then distributes to food banks and other nonprofits year round.
