Oneonta Starr Ranch Growers began production of Pacific Northwest cherries the last weekend of May.

Scott Marboe, marketing director for Wenatchee, Wash.-based Oneonta, said early quality was good and volume is expected to quickly rise.

“The fruit is looking very nice, really clean with a good range of size,” he said June 2 in a news release. “(Volumes) should really start to pick up by the weekend, and next week will be a good time to start with those early season programs.”

Oneonta expects promotable volumes through the end of August.

Besides dark sweet cherries, the grower produces the lighter colored rainiers. Those will start in mid-June.

Demand for Northwest fruit has picked up as California winds down, Marboe said.
