Vancouver, British Columbia-based Oppenheimer will handle sales, marketing and distribution for West Coast Tomato Growers LLC, the new company founded by Harry Singh Jr., according to an Oppenheimer news release.
West Coast Tomato should begin shipping its first crop of California vine-ripes in July. Singh Jr. and his family have farmed on the coast just north of San Diego for more than 70 years.
Two former Oceanside employees, Marcia Adler and Dick Keim, have joined Oppenheimer and will work on the West Coast Tomato account.
The West Coast Tomato field tomato production complements Oppenheimer’s greenhouse tomato deals in Canada, Mexico and the U.S., according to the release.
Oceanside was one of the nation’s largest suppliers of vine-ripe tomatoes. The company cited labor and water costs, competition from Mexico, California’s regulatory climate and urban encroachment as its reasons for closing.
