The Oppenheimer Group expects to double its northwest cherry volumes this year.
Vancouver, British Columbia-based Oppenheimer traced the growth to two growers, The Dalles, Ore.-based Orchard View Farms and Milton-Freewater, Ore.-based Blue Mountain Growers. This is the third year Oppenheimer is marketing Orchard View cherries, the first year it is marketing Blue Mountain cherries, said Karin Gardner, Oppenheimer's marketing communications manager.
Because Blue Mountain harvests early in the season and Orchard View late, the addition of the growers will help Oppenheimer provide its customers with consistent volumes from mid-June to mid-August, David Nelley, the company’s apple, pear and cherry category director, said in a news release.
Orchard View is known for large, sweet cherries that are perfect for exports, Nelley said. Blue Mountain Growers is a cooperative that produces newer varieties with long shelf life in small orchards.
