Officials at the Oppenheimer Group say the Taylor’s Gold pears from New Zealand this season are possibly the best ever.
The Vancouver, British Columbia-based Oppenheimer Group has been importing Taylor’s Gold pears for about 15 years, according to a news release. David Nelley, Oppenheimer’s category director for apples and pears, said in the release that the fruit he saw on a recent trip to New Zealand was of excellent quality.
Nelley said in the release the Taylor’s Gold pear crop has good sizes and volumes, which Oppenheimer is promoting now through July. He said that lighter pear supplies from the northwest U.S. this year have created an opening for the fresh crop of Taylor’s Gold pears.
In addition to the Taylor’s Gold variety, Oppenheimer is offering New Zealand-grown bosc, comice, Honey Belle and Velvetine varieties, as well as a range of Asian pears and the Papple this spring and summer, according to the news release.
Oppenheimer plans a promotional push through the summer and into fall with its pear program, with the culmination being the announcement of the Taylor’s Gold retailer of the year in October at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit in New Orleans.
