Organics Unlimited, San Diego, declared September GROW Month.
GROW, a program the company started six years ago, has granted more than $500,000 to social programs in Mexico and Educador, where the company grows its bananas, according to its news release.
It said it will promote its GROW (Giving Resources and Opportunities to Workers) Month, which corresponds to the time most U.S. and Mexican children return to school.
For the 2011-12 school year, GROW is funding educational programs and community development and health services. It will fund scholarships for junior high through college, and a homework club and lab for younger students, according to the release.
It supports Casa Amiga university housing program, the GROW education center, vision and dental clinics, and business training for young adults.
