Truly Raw Gourmet has chosen to source Mexican coconuts for its sorbets from San Diego-based Organics Unlimited.
Los Angeles-based Truly Raw Gourmet, a maker of organic coconut desserts, weighed alternatives for a while, according to owner Kippy Miller.
“The other coconuts we found were young Thai coconuts, which require dipping in order to maintain quality in shipping,” she said in a news release. “This dipping process involves chemicals, which concerns us in maintaining the organic nature of our product….Organics Unlimited was the only company to offer mature organic coconuts that were not dipped.”
The shorter shipping distance compared to Thailand also played a part.
Miller’s business partner is Max Wolfe. The company’s sorbets, packaged in glass, also include locally grown fresh organic fruit and raw unheated honey.
The grower-shipper’s fair-wage policy with its Mexico workforce contributed to Truly Raw Gourmet’s decision, Organics Unlimited president Mayra Velazquez de Leon said in the release.
