In support of responsible fertilizer management, the Prince Edward Island Potato Board, Charlotteton, has joined the Farming 4R Island initiative.

The island-wide stewardship program involves the “4R” approach of applying nutrients using the right source at the right rate, at the right time and in the right place, according to a news release.

It was developed by the Canadian Fertilizer Institute in conjunction with the International Plant Nutrition Institute, The Fertilizer Institute and Fertilizers Europe.

The Canadian Fertilizer Institute has committed $150,000 over three years toward the 4R island initiative.

Among the projects it plans to help fund is hiring a professional agronomist to promote the 4R concept, conducting workshops on the subject and establishing five demonstration farms that showcase proper nutrient management.

“The 4R Program is a new way we should all be looking at fertilizer application, Gary Linkletter, chairman of the PEI Potato Board, said in the release. “As an industry, agriculture needs to take a proactive approach to the environmental practices that we use.”
