MONTEREY, Calif. – The Produce Marketing Association is donating 27 salad bars to school districts in California, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas.
The trade group’s chairman, Jan DeLyser, announced the donations – valued at more than $70,000 – at the PMA Foodservice Conference and Expo opening session in Monterey. They fulfill the bulk of a $100,000 pledge made in January on behalf of the Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools initiative.
So far, PMA has donated 38 school salad bars. Eleven were part of a California drive by PMA volunteers and members that raised $28,875 above the original pledge. Each salad bar costs $2,625.
The latest recipients are:
- California: Kings Canyon School District, two;
- Georgia: Gwinnett County public schools, seven; Bremen City, three; Stevens County, three;
- Louisiana: St. Tammany Parish schools, including New Orleans, 10; and
- Texas: Frisco Independent School District near Dallas, two offered.
“PMA selected these states and these school districts because they are also close to the locations of major PMA events,” said DeLyser, who is also vice president of marketing at the California Avocado Commission. “This is one way we can give back to the communities that welcome our industry back year after year while also building demand for our healthy products.”
“Getting these kids turned on to fruits and vegetables early in life helps ensure that they will develop healthful eating habits – and be our customers – for a lifetime,” DeLyser said. “I encourage every one of you to consider what your company or you personally can do to contribute to this investment in our future.”
