Bryan Silbermann, who's had that role since 1996, will remain as chief executive officer.
Green Burns officially begins in the new position Dec. 1, but will be at PMA's annual Fresh Summit in October in New Orleans. She was at the association's foodservice expo in Monterey, Calif., recently.
" ... It was so clear that Cathy connects with our members on many levels — from senior executive to champion of healthy eating to principled leader," according to an Aug. 4 news release from Silbermann and Jan DeLyser, PMA chairwoman.
Burns will play a "crucial role" in the new strategic plan, "especially in helping (members') business grow in the midst of so much change in our consumer and trade marketplaces."
Green Burns was The Packer's 2008 Produce Marketer of the Year. That year, she became a member of PMA's Produce Traceability Initiative steering committee, a position she stepped down from in November, citing increased work responsilities.
In December, she was removed as president at Food Lion, after almost 3 years in that position, as the retailer purged numerous employees in a restructuring.
Green Burns worked for Scarborough, Maine-based Hannaford Bros. in several management positions before becoming vice president of fresh merchandising.
In 2002 she joined Food Lion, a sister company of Hannaford Bros., as senior vice president of fresh merchandising, distribution and quality assurance. Green Burns then served as senior vice president of retail operations-north, and in 2005 Food Lion named her its chief operating officer.
"Cathy is held in the highest regard by those in the fresh produce industry who know her depth of experience and perspective, attributes that will contribute greatly to grown the value we provide members," according to the news release.
Initially, she will focus on leading development of the PMA board and staff, and on business development activities, according to the release.
She'll report to Silbermann.
