Courtesy Pacific Organic ProduceSan Francisco-based Pacific Organic Produce is importing Peruvian organic pomegranate arils, adding several months of availability to its program for the fruit.

The first load of Purity Organic-labeled arils from Peru arrived April 21. They ship in 16 3.5-ounce packs. Suggested retail price per punnet is $3.99.

“We’ll be landing those at Los Angeles and Kennedy (New York) primarily, but I’m sure we can do Miami too,” said Greg Holzman, Pacific Organic founder.

“We’re the only receivers of organic arils in the U.S. now because there’s only one supplier in Peru and it’s offseason southern hemisphere fruit.” Supply is expected to run from April to August.

“We’re going to try to have as close to year-round as possible — maybe nine months a year of organic supply — by tying into the California deal,” Holzman said.

Once the arils are on store shelves, the company anticipates a shelf life around 15 days with proper handling.
