The film, FreshCast BF, was a nominee for a Fruit Logistica 2014 Innovation Award, according to a news release. When used with BrimaPack’s NicePack packaging system the FreshCast BF film can extend shelf life of broccoli and cauliflower for at least five to seven days when maintained at 64.4° Fahrenheit, according to the release.
Unlike some other packaging films, FreshCast BF does not have perforations and does not require the use of chemicals of other substances on the film to absorb ethylene as it is release from broccoli, cauliflower or other brassicas.
Instead, the FreshCast BF creates an optimal atmosphere for the produce during storage and display, the release said. It has anti-fogging characteristics that allow consumers to easily see the produce. The film can be used plain or pre-printed with labels or other product information, according to the release.
Available in three different widths, the FreshCast BF film can be used for a variety of sizes and weights of broccoli and cauliflower. When it is used with VePack P-series packing machines it can reduce packaging costs 50%, company director Ron van de Pavert said in the release.
