A capital expansion, new distribution locations and a new management team should help bolster a U.S. packaging supplier.
Formerly relying on imported netting, the investments in its blown film extruder, knitters and wide web printing press machinery should shorten lead times and provide more manufacturing flexibility to Sev-Rend’s fresh produce customers, said Rob Williams, owner.
In April, Sev-Rend opened distribution points in Bakersfield, Calif., and Vidalia, Ga., and earlier in the year installed machinery to manufacture soft tubular knitting.
A 52-inch central impression press allows Sev-Rend to print film in up to eight colors and a new lamination unit affords for reverse printing, Williams said.
The new locations serve as stocking locations for distribution of its netting, winelgass, tags and film, he said.
“The blown film line allows us to vertically integrate as well as control our own lead times and our own quality standards,” Williams said. “Lead times will be drastically shortened compared to where the industry is now. We will be able to service form fill and seal equipment that uses the flexible packaging that we will manufacture for pouches. It also utilizes netting and film that we manufacture for the form-filled sealed equipment for produce.”
Sev-RendSev-Rend Corp., Collinsville, Ill., expanded domestic production on machinery by installing this netting machine to better manufacture packaging for produce customers. The company also added new distribution locations and a new management team. Williams said the capital investment allows Sev-Rend to provide improved packaging customization in terms of color and material.
In management changes, Sev-Rend in January added Harrison Chien, vice president of sales and marketing, Greg Petermeyer as vice president of operations and Dan Duckworth as controller. Harrison worked in consumer packaging where he was exposed to produce packaging while Petermeyer, who joined in November, worked a dozen years in flexible packaging operations. Duckworth, who joined in January, possess many years of accounting and computer management expertise.
Fresh produce customers represent about 75% of Sev-Rend’s sales.
The company manufactures products including tags and labels, clip wires and clip bands, SecuriTag equipment applicator for clamshells, thermal printers, handheld and semi-automatic label dispensers and flexible packaging.
