CERRITOS, Calif. — Southern California banana lovers turned out in bunches to check out Dole Food Co.’s colorful Peel the Love food truck the week of June 17.
The truck kicked off an eight-city 4,800-mile nationwide tour in Seattle Memorial Day weekend and showed up at the ABC Unified School District Education Foundation’s inaugural Into the Summer Fun Run and wellness fair in Cerritos June 22.
Visitors could participate in a 5K run/walk and wellness fair then stop by the Peel the Love truck where tour managers Leah and Luke Carmalt and helpers sampled banana products, gave away recipe booklets and trivia prizes and shared new usage ideas, like adding bananas to salads.
Response to the Dole food truck was “overwhelmingly positive,” Leah Carmalt said.
Cerritos was one of several Southern California stops for the food truck.
The purpose of the tour, which will continue through Labor Day, is to give consumers a broader understanding of how they can incorporate Dole bananas into easy-to-make recipes where they work, shop and play, said Bil Goldfield, Dole’s director of corporate communications.
“Like our campaign messages over the past few years, Peel the Love emphasizes the potential and versatility of bananas all summer long and seeks to teach Americans there is a lot more to them than to have them for breakfast or an out-of-hand snack.”
The company hopes to “create new sustainable banana habits,” Goldfield said.
The Peel the Love campaign capitalizes on food truck popularity and consumers’ culinary interest, he said.
The tour is cosponsored by Dole Packaged Foods and Blue Diamond Almond Breeze almond milk.
