Peruvian Asparagus Importers Association The Peruvian Asparagus Importers Association touts its position in the world’s fresh asparagus market and its ability to provide relatively uniform volumes through the year in its 2014-15 category management plan.

Released July 8, the category management plan is designed to help retailers increase sales, association coordinator Priscilla Lleras said in a news release.

“The Plan contains statistics, trends and strategies that will equip retailers and the industry at large with the most updated information in the category,” Lleras said in the release.

Citing The Packer’s Fresh Trends 2014, the association plan states that U.S. consumers are adding asparagus to their shopping carts more often than in the past, making it the third most popular fresh produce item that consumers say they are buying now.

A key factor for retail buyers is the uniform availability that asparagus from Peru offers, as compared to Mexico, which has a huge production peak in March before dropping below Peru’s production volumes from May through December most years, according to the plan.

Peru’s crop accounted for 47% of the imported asparagus in the U.S. and 45% of the U.S. dollar value for imported asparagus last year, according to the plan.

Copies of the plan are available from any member of the association or by contacting Lleras via e-mail at prestige@1scom.net.
