The honor comes on the heels of Piazza achieving zero-waste status, defined as a diversion of more than 90% of waste from landfills and incinerators.
Currently, Piazza is at 92%, according to Scott Lutocka, facilities manager, and looks to reach 95% or higher in the future.
“We paid about $100,000 for waste removal in 2005. We were just looking for a way to manage expenses,” he said.
By 2011, those expenses dropped to $15,800, with a total of 46,000 in rebates, netting the company more than $30,000.
Lutocka says the company now sends only 326 tons of waste to landfills, compared to 2,175 tons in 2005.
