Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co., Charleston, S.C., has agreed to sell stores to Bi-Lo and Harris Teeter.

Jacksonville, Fla.-based Bi-Lo Holdings LLC plans to buy 16 stores in South Carolina and six in Georgia, according to a news release. The deal is expected to close in October.

“The departure of employees and stores from the Piggly Wiggly team will be acutely felt, but we know that Bi-Lo Holdings will benefit from these outstanding folks,” said David Schools, president and chief executive officer of Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co., in a news release. “We are glad that employees will have the opportunity to work for Bi-Lo holdings and guests will continue to be served by the familiar people who have been the backbone of these stores for years.”

The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2013, and stores will be re-branded under the Bi-Lo banner. Terms were not disclosed.

Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter Supermarkets Inc.’s agreement includes six locations and one future location in the Charleston, S.C. area, according to a Harris Teeter news release.

The company plans to close locations for three to four days for stocking and employee training, according to the release.

“Piggly wiggly has a long tradition of operating customer-friendly stores in Charleston,” said Thomas Dickson Harris Teeter, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, in a news release.

“These store locations and the dedicated associates who work in them make this an especially attractive transaction for Harris Teeter,” he said.

The company plans to remodel and expand some locations under the Harris Teeter banner, Dickson said in the release.

Guests, Now Customers are Guests and employees are dedicated associates.Bi-Lo is considered to be among the worsts employers in grocery industry so I don't think anyone wins here. Looks like Piggly Wiggly is starting to break up, might be time to look for a job, in other words the engine room is flooding and there are only so many life boats.
