Pink LadyPink Lady America is encouraging consumers to eat Pink Lady apples instead of less nutritious sweets for Valentine’s Day, and it’s backing that effort with three new programs.

“We aren’t suggesting there not be a continued giving of Valentine’s Day presents which are sweet and tasty. All we’re saying is there’s an easy way to give a loved one a very tasty treat and have it be healthy, too,” John Reeves, general manager of Yakima, Wash.-based Pink Lady America, said in a company news release.

In support of that message, the company is launching three nutrition-focused programs this year.

The first is an educational program that compares the nutritional benefits of apples to junk foods.

The second is “Take a Pink Lady for a Walk,” which encourages consumers to match Pink Ladys with a daily 20-minute walk.

In the third program, Pink Lady America will highlight the results of a Cornell University study which found that kids are more likely to select apples and other healthful foods if they’re branded with cartoon stickers.
