The Yakima Valley Grower-Shippers Association estimates that Washington growers will likely ship about 3.9 million cartons in the season about to end, up from 3.4 million cartons last season and a state record, according to a news release from Yakima, Wash.-based Pink Lady America LLC.
Last year’s total was also a record.
“What we’re seeing in the Pink Lady industry is something not always seen in the farming business,” John Reeves, general manager of Pink Lady America, said in the release. “This apple is on a roll in a number of respects starting with marketing success reaching into a string of seasons and now showing an upward trend in production.”
The 2013-14 season was the first season in which the Maslin, an early-season type of Pink Lady, was available in significant volumes, Reeves said.
