The Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation is funding a research grant to help find a cure for breast cancer.
The Rocky Ford, Colo.-based nonprofit corporation awarded Denise Muñoz $30,000 as its 2012 breast cancer research grant recipient.
An associate staff scientist at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute in Oakland, Calif., Muñoz helped start a breast cancer research program at the institute by studying the changes that occur in the initial steps of carcinogenesis, the creation of cancer, according to a news release.
Supported by leading pumpkin growers, the foundation plans to contribute 25 cents to an organization dedicated to breast cancer research for every pink pumpkin sold, according to the release.
“We want to express our gratitude to all of our growers and retailers, without whom this grant would not have been possible,” Don Goodwin, foundation president, said in the release. “This puts us one step closer to finding a cure.”
