Helping retailers reduce shrink and providing consumers with added value are the two driving forces behind new Green Giant sweet corn packs this season from Pioneer Growers.
The new packs began shipping April 1 and will be available through Independence Day, according to a news release from the Belle Glade, Fla.-based Pioneer Growers.
For consumers, a 30-ounce, resealable bag with 12 corn cobbettes provides single serving sizes and microwaveable convenience, according to the release.
Each cobbette is wrapped in a steam-fresh microwaveable bag. The 30-ounce bags are packed in six-count cartons for easy handling by retailers’ produce department employees.
Also new this season is a tray pack with eight full-sized ears. They are packed in 10-count cases instead of the traditional 12-count cartons, according to the release.
The 10-count cases of tray packs are available in yellow, white and bicolor sweet corn varieties.
“We developed the 10-count case to assist retailers in reducing shrink,” Pioneer sales manager Jon Browder said in the release.
“We felt the reduced size would provide retailers with both cost savings and increased value.”
Vice president and general manager Gene Duff said in the release that research has shown some consumers prefer packaged ears even during the traditional fresh sweet corn season.
“Our sales data analysis shows that consumers who purchase packaged corn continue to purchase this product even during the peak bulk corn season,” Duff said in the release.
“Packaged corn provides added value to the corn category during the spring and summer seasons and we’ve seen increased sales results using the Green Giant brand.”
As part of the Green Giant program, the new packs feature Box Tops for Education coupons.
