To expedite perishable cargo transport, Port Everglades is expanding its hours for produce at two of the port’s produce treatment centers, according to a news release.

Port EvergladesThe Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based port is allowing trucks to enter and exit from the Chiquita ripening center and International Warehouse Services’ fumigation facility between midnight and 4 a.m.

The changes expand upon the facilities’ regular hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The gates will still be closed from 10 p.m. to midnight and 4-6 a.m., according to a news release.

Because of security gate closures, perishables that were treated late in the day could not be transported past 10 p.m. in the past.

Security officers will now open the gates past midnight for Chiquita and IWS to make deliveries, according to the release.

“As the leading perishable seaport in Florida, we understand the need to move perishable commodities faster so that they are fresher when they arrive to the marketplace,” Steven Cernak, the port’s chief executive officer and port director, said in the release. “We applaud U.S. Customs & Border Protection for recognizing this need and working with port staff and our customers to find a solution. These extended hours help speed goods to market.”

The port moves nearly half of all the refrigerated containers in Florida, according to the release.
