Prime Time International has acquired an 80,000-square-foot packinghouse and distribution facility in Somis, Calif.

The site, which previously housed tomato packing operations of Naples, Fla.-based Gargiulo Inc., is being remodeled. Renovations are expected to be complete by the end of the year.

Morgan Fragoso, previously operations and plant manager for Cal-Sun Produce Co., Oxnard Calif., has been named shipping and cooler manager.

The grower-shipper of multicolored peppers is moving from a leased facility to the Somis site to pursue expansion and diversification.

“We reached a point where we needed to expand our operations and take control of our own destiny in this important region,” Mike Way, managing member at Coachella, Calif.-based Prime Time, said in a news release. “This purchase enables us to expand not only our packing and shipping operations, but also to develop a line of services for other produce industry companies including handling, cooling, consolidation and cross docking.”

The remodeling work includes converting packing operations to compatibility with peppers; installation of bagging equipment; conversion to forced air cooling; and installation of new storage racking to increase capacity.

“This is a part of a long-term strategic plan to continue to grow our pepper business and meet the expanding needs of our customers,” said Jeff Taylor, managing member.

Carl Sam Maggio and Mark Nickerson, Prime Time founders and principle owners, will preside over the transition.
