Donate 16 tons, and what do you get? Healthy diets

More than 30 volunteers helped gather 32,000 pounds of fresh produce from the convention floor of the May 14-16 United Fresh Produce Association’s 2013 expo for distribution to San Diego-area food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeders.

United Fresh and Feeding America were partners in the effort, according to a news release from Washington, D.C.-based United Fresh.

“United Fresh and exhibitors at the show are proud to support the Feeding America network of food banks,” John Toner, United Fresh vice president of convention and industry relations said in the release. “Fresh produce is an important part of a healthy diet and the donation highlights how the industry is helping those in need each and every day.”

With one in four children in San Diego Country struggling with hunger, the donation helps meet a big need for assistance in the community, Jennifer Gilmore, executive director of Feeding America San Diego, said in the release.

“Feeding America thanks the United Fresh Produce Association and its 2013 exhibitor donors for their more than 32,000 pounds of donations to Feeding America San Diego,” Bob Aiken, president and chief executive officer of Feeding America said in the release. Aiken also thanked Freeman and IFCO for their additional logistics support and assistance with the donation.
