Produce for Kids helps school health projects

A Produce for Kids campaign is generating funds to benefit children’s health and wellness classroom projects.

So far, the Orlando, Fla.-based organization’s fall “Healthy schools, healthy minds” campaign has raised more than $169,000 to support health and wellness projects in participating retail partners’ local communities, according to a news release.

Produce For Kids During the fall campaign, Produce for Kids worked with Netherlands-based Ahold USA Inc.’s Giant Food Stores, Martin’s Super Food Store, Giant Food LLC and Stop & Shop Supermarkets, Meijer Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich., Publix Super Markets Inc., Lakeland, Fla., and 15 fruit and vegetable suppliers raising money that benefited classroom projects through DonorsChoose.org, according to the release.

The participating fruit and vegetable suppliers made a donation to DonorsChoose.org, an online charity that helps public and charter school teachers. The more items shoppers added to their shopping lists, the more local classrooms would benefit, according to the release.

“Our inaugural campaign with DonorsChoose.org has proved quite successful,” Produce for Kids president John Shuman, president of Shuman Produce Inc., Reidsville, Ga., said in the release. “I am honored to say we are bringing health and nutrition awareness to more than 140 classrooms in our retail partners’ markets across the U.S.”

Produce for Kids plans to promote the projects throughout the spring through social media and other websites to encourage match donations from the public, according to the release.
