Courtesy Ready Pac Foods Ready Pac Foods is on pace to use more than 56 million recycled plastic beverage bottles this year for packaging in its Bistro bowl salad line.
Each bowl salad package from Irwindale, Calif.-based Ready Pac, including the insert that separates proteins and condiments from leafy greens, contains 60% post-consumer recycled content.
That works out to just more than one recycled 500-millileter beverage bottle per package, according to a news release.
In 2012 Ready Pac launched organic Bistro salads plus new stock-keeping units for its conventional line and some new private label bowl salads.
“We have made continuous improvements over time to create a more sustainable bowl salad package, and the net effect is we’re making a significant contribution to helping the environment,” Tristan Simpson, director of marketing and corporate communications, said in the release.
The bowls and inserts are produced in plants using 50% solar power. That saves about 0.3 kilowatt hours per package, the company estimates, an amount equal to running an energy-saving 26-watt, 1300-lumen bulb for 26 hours.
