Growers and others in the fresh produce supply chain have a new resource to help them apply food safety research.

Called “A Practical Guide to the Scientific Research Presented at the Center for Produce Safety’s 2012 Research Symposium,” the report from Newark, Del.-based Produce Marketing Association and Irvine, Calif.-based Western Growers and is designed to help produce industry operators to understand and apply the latest food safety research.

The report summarizes and interprets research from 18 projects presented at the third annual Center for Produce Safety Research Symposium in June 2012 at the University of California-Davis. The projects, funded by the Center for Produce Quality, include topics related to buffer zones and animal vectors, irrigation water quality, wash water and process control, according to a news release.

Report helps industry apply food safety research“It can be frustrating for non-scientists to identify key findings in research reports,” Bob Whitaker, PMA chief science & technology officer and chair of the CPS Technical Committee, said in the release. “We hope this report helps people from all over our industry understand what this research means and how it might be used in their own food safety programs.”

The report, co-authored by Whitaker and Hank Giclas, senior vice president for strategic planning of science and technology for Western Growers, includes an executive summary describing research trends and a review of each research project. The Center for Produce Safety has funded 69 projects totaling $10.6 million since 2008, according to the release.

The 2013 CPS Research Symposium is set for June 25-26 in Rochester, N.Y., at the Wegmans Conference Center.
