The comment period for a rule that will make changes to the Reportable Food Registry has been extended.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced June 17 it will add 60 days to the comment period for a proposed rule, “Implementation of the Food and Drug Administration Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Amendments to the Reportable Food Registry (RFR) Provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.”

Comments may be made beginning June 18 at http://www.regulations.gov using docket number FDA-2013-N-0590.

The FDA created the Reportable Food Registry after Congress passed legislation in 2007 requiring the agency to establish an electronic portal for companies that handle food that may cause illnesses or deaths.

Fresh-cut processors are required to report to the FDA if a product tests positive for pathogens after it’s been shipped.
