Ruma Fruit and Produce, Everett, Mass., has fiddlehead ferns available for ordering.

Many fine-dining restaurants serve the unique, wild vegetable on their spring menus, leading consumers to request them at grocery stores, according to a release said.

The fiddlehead fern season is short, typically beginning at the end of April and running through mid-June. Company president Jim Ruma says the little-known vegetable is an important part of their business.

“The key to our success, and sometimes to our survival, has been to diversify, and fiddleheads have been a big part of that,” he said in the release.
